WHBI-201
Control Your Camera I - 3 sessions

This three-session class is for anyone with a point and shoot digital camera OR a digital SLR who wants to learn how to control the three main factors that affect the exposure of his/her images: how fast your camera's shutter opens and closes ('shutter speed'), how large or small the lens opens to let light hit your camera's sensor ('aperture'), and how sensitive your camera is to the light that is available ('ISO'). Students will explore this "photographic triangle" by examining a collection of images and seeing the results of changing any one setting, as well as by engaging in hands-on practice with their own cameras with a focus on the use of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. We will use Bryan Peterson's book, Understanding Exposure, to reinforce principles discussed in class. Though these classes will include lecture and discussion, participants will have considerable hands-on time to work with their cameras and practice what they learn in each class!

Control Your Camera II - 3 sessions

Move beyond controlling exposure and learn about other factors that affect how your images turn out. During this 3-session class, we will discuss how things such as white balance influence how your images turn out and how we can use exposure compensation to improve your shots in camera. In addition, you will learn how to use exposure bracketing and burst mode to zero in on the image capture. Learn how your camera's metering setting affects your images and what filters to use to improve your shots. Finally, you will learn how to interpret and use the histogram that appears on your camera's LCD to improve the next shot. Each class session will include considerable hands-on time to practice. Although class #WHBI-201 is not a pre-requisite, it is assumed that those taking this class have, at least, a rudimentary understanding of how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together to create a photograph. Bring your Bryan Peterson book, Understanding Exposure. If you need to order one, select it as part of the registration process.

Improve Your Images Using Small Flashes- 3 sessions

Have you got a small flash or are you thinking of purchasing one but you're just not sure how to use it? Are you intimidated by all the dials and integrating the flash with your camera's controls? Have you always said - as I used to - "I only shoot available light and don't want to mess with flash!" Well, get over those feelings and join me In this 3-session class tolearn how to use your small flash on and off your camera to take incredibly improved images.

Whether you want to simply improve the images you take in low-light conditions, are interested in making better people portraits, or taking product shots for an online blog or online sales page, this class is the one to take! You will learn how to make better use of your small flash on your camera as well as how and why to take it off your camera. Here is what you will learn:

  • using the controls on your external flash unit
  • determining when working in manual or automatic mode is better
  • getting images with depth even when using your flash on-camera
  • taking your flash unit off your camera and connecting the two
  • using ONE flash off-camera to create a variety of moods in your images simply by changing your flashes position and distance relative to your subject
  • using modifiers (homemade and commercial) to control the light from your flash
  • creating a completely black or completely white background to put focus on your subject

If students do not have their own off-camera flash units, they will be able to take turns using the instructor's equipment to practice concepts covered in the class. The class is totally hands-on with explanation and discussion of what we are doing as we do it. This class is most appropriate for those students with single lens reflex cameras (SLRs) or higher end compact cameras with a hot shoe for an external flash unit. Participants should bring camera with fully charged battery, memory card, and camera manual and, if they have them, flash unit(s) loaded with charged batteries and the flash manual, as well as any connecting cables if they own them.
