Control Your Camera! - I teach a variety of classes on photography that cover the gamut from absolute beginners to seasoned shooters. Lynchburg ClassSome classes are all about the camera and the gear. My evening classes meet at James River Day School in Lynchburg and my datime classes meet in our home.

My first two classes are all about taking control of your camera and learning why your images are too dark or too light so you can improve your image taking outcomes. Though primarily for those with single lens reflex (SLR) cameras, my first class, "Controlling Exposure," can help those shooting with compact cameras as well.

Canon SpeedliteControl the Light: New to my line-up of classes last fall was my "Working with Light" course. Like many photographers, I have avoided using the flash, or "strobe" as some call them, for my camera because I was happy with the results I got. Sound familiar? I leaned on the crutch of "oh, I prefer to shoot with available light" not realizing just how easy it is to use a hot-shoe flash unit to improve my images. If this does sound familiar and you DO want to learn how to take advantage of the flash unit you purchased for your camera, then you will want to sign up for the "Working with Light" course this spring! This is, as are my other classes, a total hands-on class experience where you will practice what you learn with your own equipment in class. You will learn how to use your hot-shoe flash unit both on and off your camera to get images that have dramatic shadows and not ones that have that deer-in-the-headlight appearance.

Just Shoot! - Photo Class ImageSometimes all you need is a little help when you are out using your camera. Or, maybe, all you are looking for is an opportunity to experiment with your camera along with some other like minded people. For these reasons, I created my "Shooting to Learn" series of classes. My first offering is a 3-session class in May in which students - class is limited to six - will accompany me to different locations in Lynchburg and for 90 minutes we will all shoot, help each other, ask questions, and experiment. After shooting, we will assemble and compare each other's shots taken in the all the same places. This is helpful because we will each see things our classmates saw that we, perhaps, missed or things our classmates shot in a way much diffferent than we shot them. During these three class sessions, students will experience some "street photography," learn to look at things around them, "close to home," in a different way, and experiment with macro photography and "working a subject." Throughout the class, we will all be trying to tell a story with our images. Join me in this fun, "in the field," hands-on course this coming May!

Class Information

BillI have taught photography classes since the fall of 2010 for Albemarle County's community education program, but I have been a teacher all of my life. See my About page for more about my history. I will be teaching my customized classes in Lynchburg again in the springl of 2012. The administrators at James River Day School have very graciously offered me space in their school to hold the classes as part of their community outreach efforts.
